Alles Liebe euch Allen!

4 weeks and 4 days later

It’s unbelievable how quickly time flies by…. you take countless books with you and worry about what you will do on the ship for the whole long time….
I can tell you 😉….I haven’t opened a single book yet!

But let’s start from the beginning….
…as announced in the last report, the journey continued to Preveza…in good old British manner and….with a mischievous grin on the face of the woman at the helm….with bringing two bearings in line…because there was a current in the entry canal.
Finally at anchor I enjoyed the peace and quiet and the lively activity around the boat. After a short moment of shock, not knowing what that might be, I recognized huge turtles that held their heads above the water for a moment, very impressive, because never seen before.
Although the bay is right in front of the city, there is a real idyll here, similar to a nature reserve of a lake.

Unfortunately, the city itself doesn’t have much to offer, it’s more reminiscent of the party miles of well-known vacation spots. Nevertheless, there are all the craftsmen that you need for boating here. My jib was repaired within a day and I was able to continue sailing towards Lefkas.
There was a lively rush on the full hour in front of the swing bridge to the canal to Lefkas, everyone somehow wanted to go through at the same time and the oncoming traffic could only make themselves heard by shouting.

Lefkas is a nice little town with many branched alleys, colorful houses with pretty colourful galvanized balconies, countless bars, a pretty clock tower, small shops and a large main square where life takes place in the evening. Laughing children on tricycles, slide ponies, balloon sellers, musicians, everything comes together here and spreads a good mood.

Unfortunately, the marina has recently been taken over by D-Marin and is greatly overpriced. Water and electricity have to be paid extra, so I left the port quickly after a fuel stop and the purchase of spare parts.
Continue south through the canal.

Ithaca, the home island of Odysseus, is my next destination. This very green island enchants with many beautiful bays and me with a delightful little „jungle cafe“ and countless mountain goats.

Then it continues to Kefalonia to the city port of Sami. It is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is drier, harsher than the others.
The coastline is made up of high limestone cliffs, coves and small stretches of white sandy beach such as Myrtos Beach to the north, which has been the setting for countless Hollywood films. Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow serpentine roads…I viewed it from above because of the many parked cars.
With the rental car I went on to the blue grotto near Melissani, to the stalactite cave in Drogarati and to the capital Argostoli.
Conclusion: the round trip by car was a dream. You have to enjoy the countless mountain roads with fantastic views. You can safely ignore the capital.
2 days later I proceed to the neighboring island of Zakynthos in the bay of Agios Nikolaos in the northeast. There is now a free buoy field under the charming care of a large Greek hyenas 😉. This delightful little town is a must-see. And to all the girls among the readership… be sure to visit Barbara’s little shop „Almyra“.

A few souvenirs from there are already stowed away 😉.
Across the bay at Alykes, a tourism resort and not recommended, we continue to the capital Zakynthos, also called Zante. Here fate took its further course, I caught the only berth at the city harbor among at least 70 boats, which was situated on the left and right by two painful rocks … to the chagrin of Mawari’s rudder blade.
The diver confirmed our suspicion and put it down to the last earthquake in the 80’s. In Kalamata, the next larger marina, an appointment was made for the lift. Learning by doing and by mistakes! My attempt to take it with humor…because what happens has already happened and you never stop learning.
! Always keep as far away from the pontoon in Greece as possible!
…. the longer mooring lines were sorted out from the depths of our locker.
This island was also explored with a rental car and turned out to be one of the most beautiful ones for me so far. I went directly to Porto Vromi on the west side of Zakynthos. Nearby there is the certainly well-known bay Navagio, with the 1980 stranded
Cigarette smuggler’s ship. The bay is currently closed due to several rock falls and boats are only allowed to approach the beach.
I rented a small motor boat because Eddie wasn’t allowed on the pleasure boat. It was my first experience of this motorized type and an extremely unpleasant ride. With both hands and 4 paws clinging to the boat, even Eddie turned green in the face. 😅
In hindsight, I understood the sales lady, who said calmly, that it is very uncomfortable outside today, but I could trust our skipper Ilias.
We rode, jumped, surfed and bypassed the larger waves as best as we could…. drove along beautiful white stone walls, white beaches, beautiful blue water, small caves, low-flying birds….and there it was….the first postcard bay…beautifully white sand and the rust-brown wreck…a great contrast to the bright blue water!
… happy and many photos later it was time to hold on tight again, take a deep breath and the whole thing back again …. we were happy to finally get off this „Jojo“ …
After a short lunch break, I continued south over the mountains.I drove through old stone villages and old olive plantations and let ourselves drift….and suddenly there she was…at the end of a small street…the next picture-perfect view and Rosanna with her most beautiful workplace in the world….a small yellow food truck like at the end of the world…a dream, and I enjoy in silence…
Via Gerakas Bay in the south, one of the most important breeding grounds for Karett sea turtles, I return to the city.
Zakynthos is truly a must-see for any trip to the Ionian Sea.

Days later I finally continue with the crossing to the mainland and thus to the Pelopones. After all, it wants to be rounded. After a night in Katakolon I continue to Methoni, the next place worth seeing. The bay is a dream and is framed by an old Venetian fortress with a Turkish tower. There is a lot to read about it for history buffs, but for me it was a sight to behold and a great tour! The cover photo is from there!
After rounding the first finger, it goes straight to Kalamata. There
Mawari is currently at the dry dock. The rudder blade has now been sanded down, drilled and is now drying out and will be renovated next week. Kalamata is a big city at the foot of a huge mountain range and offers the starting point for many sightseeing trips. There are also relatives, my aunt Heide, in Kardamili and was visited yesterday.
Kardamili is a cute village on the west side of the second finger made of stone houses, with nice restaurants and its own beach and definitely worth a visit. It can be reached either by water or after an hour’s drive on a mountain road with great views. The primeval mountain villages are on the program tomorrow.
It’s never boring on board, there’s always something to do, it’s being repaired, maintained, gadgets, cleaned, cooked and lived… and that’s the way it should be.
I’ll get back to you soon! All the best to you all!

<div class="awb-carousel
